  • Acoustics Tasks

    Hi,

I would like to ask the following questions:

    1. How strong will the acoustic signal be from the Benthos ALP-365 pinger, since it is user-selectable at 162, 168, 174 and 177 dB re 1 uPa @ 1 meter?
    2. Am I right that only 1 particular frequency is relevant for the vehicle to accomplish both acoustics tasks during the semi-finals and finals?
    3. If so, how will the switching of pingers (to ensure that only one of the two pingers from these two tasks is on) be done during the competition?

    Thank you!

    Good questions.
    1. We set the pinger to the maximum power (177). Just keep in mind that every pinger is different and even when they are all set to the loudest, they will all ping at different dB.
    2. There is only one frequency in use for each quadrant (for the semi-finals) and only one frequency for the finals. So you will only have to "worry" about a single frequency. During practice and semi-finals, the other three frequencies will be pinging so you will have to filter those out.
    3. We have control boxes on the surface. The boxes are synced via a GPS signal. Cables run down to every pinger in the water. When it is the quadrand's time to ping, a trigger signal is sent to the proper pinger.

    Hopefully, that's answers your questions.
